Basic Food Safety Literacy

If you are thinking about a career in the food industry, Basic Food Safety Literacy is a course that will teach you important rules for safe food handling. You will learn how to properly receive, store, and prepare food to prevent foodborne illnesses. You will also learn steps for cleaning and sanitizing. Class activities are practical and relate to real life workplace tasks. In addition to 20 hours of class time, you will also spend 3 hours of work practice in a commercial kitchen. When you complete this course, you will receive a Bow Valley College Certificate of Completion in Basic Food Safety. You will also take an online test to obtain the Alberta Food Safety Basics certificate.

Additional Information

  1. The minimum recommended CLB score for English language learners who want to register in these courses is Reading: 6, Writing: 5, Listening: 5, and Speaking: 5.
  2. This course does not meet provincial certification requirements but is a pre-requisite for the Food Safety, Sanitation and Hygiene certification course that does.
